Mount Monadnock Sunrise and Sunset Times

Timing Your Hike and Mount Monadnock Sunrise and Sunset Times
To hike Mount Monadnock make sure you allow enough time to finish your hike before sunset. On all direct routes to and from Mount Monadnock (White Dot, White Cross White Arrow, Dublin and Marlboro Trails) allow 4 hours round-trip to be safe. The Old Toll Road can be hiked pre-dawn as well as when darkness sets in. A hiker can see the sunset at tree-line on the White Arrow Trail and be at the Halfway House Site in about 30 minutes. Allow at least 6 hours round-trip from Gilson Pond and at least 7 hours round-trip for the Pumpelly Trail from Dublin Lake. Fast hikers may likely beat these times but it is better to allow ample time on the mountain before darkness. If you plan on hiking after dark make sure you bring more than one flashlight, in case one fails. Camping and overnight parking are not allowed on Mount Monadnock.
The times on the Sunrise Sunset table below are Eastern U. S. Daylight Savings Time, except noted by asterisks: are Eastern Standard Time. The civil twilight times (about a half an hour) may be usable twilight to hike the trails before sunrise and after sunset, but conditions, shade and side of the mountain can make a difference. I find that 30 minutes before sunrise or 30 minutes after sunset the trails become too dim to follow, any time of the year. Also, 30 minutes of usable twilight for hiking is about the same as Civil Twilight, give or take a few minutes from December to June at this latitude (42.86135 N). If there is heavy overcast; darkness will set in imediately at sunset.
